The PL123-09HSI-R is a type of Clock Generator, PLL (Phase Locked Loop) or Frequency Synthesizer. It is a low-cost, single-chip solution that enables high-performance clock generation, including a differential output drive, which supports applications such as network infrastructure and storage. This document provides an overview of the applications and functionality of the PL123-09HSI-R.

The PL123-09HSI-R is a programmable clock generator that builds clock trees using standard differential input and output signals, such as LVDS (Low Voltage Differential Signaling) or LVPECL (Low Voltage Positive Emitter Coupled Logic). Its extensive range of output frequencies, ranging from 10 to 166MHz, is ideal for creating clock frequencies for PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express), as well as for other applications that require high performance clock signals. In addition, the PL123-09HSI-R can synthesize up to eight different clock outputs from one differential input and up to four output clock frequencies from dual differential input signals.

The PL123-09HSI-R\'s PLL technology enables it to provide improved clock jitter characteristics and clock skew management, which are important factors in PC board design. Furthermore, the PL123-09HSI-R uses an input delay compensation circuit that automatically compensates for delays caused by trace and grounding impedance. This ensures a stable and consistent output clock signal.

The PL123-09HSI-R also has integrated carrier jitter filtering, which enables the device to employ spread-spectrum clock technology. This technology reduces EMI (Electro-Magnetic Interference) and also helps to reduce power consumption. In addition, the PL123-09HSI-R provides support for SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) and SATA (Serial ATA) protocols, allowing it to create clock signals compatible with both protocols.

The PL123-09HSI-R uses a patent-pending, 2-level TrimRing® technology to trim the internal clock divide by N circuitry, enabling fine frequency adjustment. This allows the speed of output clocks to be accurately controlled by the user without any additional circuitry.

The PL123-09HSI-R has a power-optimized power-down feature that significantly reduces power consumption when the device is not in-use, providing a cost-effective clock solution for high-performance systems.

In addition to its extensive range of capabilities, the PL123-09HSI-R also provides a Regulated Oscillator (R-Oscillator) that enables operation at the same frequencies and supply voltages used in traditional PLLs. This feature allows it to be used in an existing system environment with minimal modifications, providing maximum application flexibility.
