The VCO loop is composed of a charge pump and a low-pass filter (loop filter). The charge pump and loop filter are the two main components that interact within the loop. The charge pump serves as a controlled current source, whose current is dependent on the sign and magnitude of the phase error signal. It sends a stream of pulses, called spikes, to the loop filter, which is normally a low-pass type, converting the current pulses into a voltage Waveform. The output voltage is then fed back to the VCO, affecting the output frequency.
The output of the PL602-27SC is generated by mixing the reference signal, provided by the internal oscillator or external reference, with the output of the VCO. By mixing the two signals with a so-called frequency synthesizer, a wide range of output frequencies is generated. The device’s frequency synthesizer can be programmed to generate up to 1600 MHz.
