The PLL1706DBQRG4 is a type of clock generator. Clock generators, also known as PLLs (phase lock loops), frequency synthesizers, and clock multipliers, are components applied in electronics to control the frequency of clocks. These components are commonly used in many consumer electronics, such as televisions, monitors, and computer networks, and in thousands of industrial and consumer applications, such as in smartphones, robotic and automotive applications, and GPS systems, among many others.

This type of clock generator consists of a phase detector, a charge pump, a loop filter and a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO). It has a low jitter, three reference clock inputs and an input for selecting one of these clocks, as well as an adjustable output frequency from 16 kHz to 312.5 MHz. It is designed to produce a high frequency clock, with a locked cycle jitter lower than 3.2 pico seconds and a fast lock time lower than 2 ms. The power consumption of this unit is less than 30mW, with a maximum power consumption of 0.12W and operating temperature range between –40~85 oC.

Working principle

The working principle of the PLL1706DBQRG4 is based on the combination of the phase detector and the VCO. This device creates a frequency from the input clock which is then compared to the VCO output frequency, the difference between both signals is used to adjust the VCO frequency and to lock the output frequency to the input frequency.

Initially, the PLL1706DBQRG4 compares the phase of the reference clock with the phase of the VCO, using the phase detector. The charge pump sends pulses to the loop filter, depending on the phase difference, which then adjusts the control voltage of the VCO. When the phases between the reference clock and the VCO match, the resulting output frequency will be equal to the input frequency.

The amount of phase difference between the two signals needed to perceived a difference in the VCO output frequency is known as “loop gain” or “lock range”. There are two factors that impact the loop gain; the loop filter components (capacitor and inductor) determine how long it takes to lock the two frequencies, while the charge pump determines the amount of frequency that can be locked to the input reference clock.

Applications

These types of clock generators can be used for a multitude of purposes within different types of circuits. It is most commonly used to ensure that multiple devices are running at the same frequency, for synchronization and for regulating the flow of signals between devices. As such, this particular model is widely used in many of the latest technology, such as in mobile phones and tablets, laptops, gaming consoles, cameras and home appliances, as well as in industrial applications, such as in precision instruments, machine controllers and automation systems.
