Optics – Light Pipes, is the subject of various specialized applications that utilize light to moderate a variety of tasks. In particular, this optical technology is used for treating objects that use computers and computers related objects, and for transmission of information in the form of images or animations. In such applications, the light is often used to carry out operations ranging from triggering a device to controlling, storing and displaying information and pictures. To this end, the light pipes are made up of special optics materials which are encased in coated tubes for protection.

The most commonly used light pipes are known as the PLP2-100 and are made up of a core lens that consists of multi-layers of optical glass (typically, seven layers, each with a thickness of 0.4mm, sealed in an aluminum casing). This core lens is then enclosed in a stainless steel casing, and each lens has its own filter, including dichroic and achromatic, to reduce the overall angular dispersion and to ensure the best possible performance.

The core of the PLP2-100 light pipe allows the optical fibers to be controlled from a distance of up to 65 meters, although the range can be extended to about 150 meters with a larger diameter pipe. At this distance, the data contained within the light pipe is not affected by the environment, making it suitable for applications in areas such as medical imaging or computer communications and monitoring. The PLP2-100 can be used in environments where the transmitted light will travel for more than 700ms, and in rare cases, up to 1.5ms. It is also capable of transmitting data at speeds up to 10Gbps, ensuring the highest quality output.

The working principle of the PLP2-100 light pipe is based on the interplay of directional filters, micro-lenses and other components. The way in which these components work together to effect the transmission, distribution, and manipulation of the light signals is known as waveguide optics. When the light enters the pipe, it passes through directional filters that limit the propagation of the light. In certain cases, the light will be back-reflected off the filter, resulting in the data being sent in one direction only. This is generally referred to as pulsed transmission.

Once the light is inside the pipe, it will be guided and directed by the micro-lenses at the end of the pipe. These lenses focus and expand the light’s energy, controlling the directions in which it can travel. Through the use of the different components, the light can be manipulated in such a way to ensure it reaches the target destination. In a way, the light pipes are the backbone of modern optical communication systems, and their performance and reliability are essential for these applications.

When used in applications such as medical imaging or computer communications, the performance of the light pipes plays a significant role in the effectiveness of the overall system. By controlling the properties of the light through the use of the components of the pipes, the data can be transmitted with the maximum speed and accuracy.
