Aluminum – Polymer Capacitors are, in essence, conductive substrates of aluminum or aluminum-alloy with electrical insulating polymer layers separating the aluminum from each other. The Aluminum – Polymer Capacitor thus created contains an anode and a cathode encased within the polymer layer, and separated by an artificial dielectric. The PLV1H680MDL1TD, is an example of an Aluminum – Polymer Capacitor, and is used in providing support to integrated circuits (ICs) in low voltage applications such as automotive, computers, and other industrial and consumer applications.

The PLV1H680MDL1TD Capacitor includes an epoxy case and a metallic bottom which prevents shorting of the two terminals. The two aluminum foil electrodes are separated by an etched dielectric film and enclosed by a low-viscosity electrically insulating electrolyte. The anode is formed on one side of the dielectric material while the cathode is formed on the other. This design allows voltage and current to be applied externally to the anode and the cathode, and thus generate an Electrostatic charge in the capacitor.

The Electrostatic charge generated by the Aluminum – Polymer Capacitors is created due to the breakdown of the electrolyte. This breakdown occurs when a high enough voltage is applied across the capacitor, thereby inducing an electric current which overcomes the dielectric breakdown force of the electrolyte and creates a conductive path across the dielectric. When in operation, the capacitor acts as a reactive element which stores charge, thus providing a stored energy reserve. This stored energy can be used as a backup source of power if the primary power source is lost.

The PLV1H680MDL1TD is suitable for use in low voltage applications such as automotive, computers, and other industrial and consumer applications. It can be used as a stand-alone device or as a series of devices for increased voltage and current handling ability. The capacitor can be used in power supplies, buffering circuits and protection circuits. It has a wide temperature range of -40°C to +105°C and a long-term reliability of 16,000-hours at 25°C without derating or failure.
