Photointerrupters, one of the subcategories of optical sensors, are photodetector ICs which detect the interruption of a beam of light. Photointerrupters are further divided into two types, depending on the design of the light-capturing device. Slot type photointerrupters are characterized by an open-slot emitter and receiver, while reflective type photointerrupters utilize a single optical source and detector element.PM-U25-R is a type of slot type Photointerrupter with a logic output. This device detects the presence or absence of an object passing through its slot, with the interruption of the infrared LED’s light and the reception of the reflected light as the signal. The device comprises of an emitter, a receiver, a circuit unit and a support frame. The emitter consists of an IR LED and a synchronization circuit. The synchronization circuit adjusts the LED’s light output pulses in order to eliminate the effect of ambient light. The receiver consists of a photosensitive device, which is capable of detecting pulses, and a supporting circuit. The receiver’s supporting circuit amplifies and waveforms the signals to detect a presence or an absence of the objects passing through the slot. PM-U25-R’s circuit unit is an integrated circuit, which conditions the signal from the receiver, and transmits it to the output in the form of a digital signal. The support frame provides a mounting point for the components and allows attachment to a control system.
