Fixed Inductors

PM1812-R12K-RC is a an inductor component used in Fixed Inductor applications. Fixed inductors are a type of inductor designed to maintain a steady inductance throughout their operating lifetime, by maintaining the same spatial configuration of the conductor and magnetic core of the component.

Fixed Inductors are composed of an inductor winding and a ferrite core, with a number of turns of wire about it. This coil can be found in a variety of shapes which can be selected according to the desired inductance or with the aim of achieving a certain stability level. The inductor core serves to preserve the flux and the associated inductance value that it is designed for.

Applications

Fixed inductors are typically used in a variety of electrical devices to filter signal or current, as well as for applications such as power conversion, voltage step-down and surge protection. PM1812-R12K-RC is designed for a variety of such applications, such as high-frequency switching, DC-DC converters, power supplies, mains power networks and low-voltage systems.

Working principle

An inductor stores energy in the form of a magnetic field. This energy is proportional to the amount of current that flows through the component. When a voltage is applied to an inductor, the current gradually increases until it reaches a steady state. The magnetic flux produced by the current increases linearly up to this point, before plateauing off. As a result, the current in an inductor does not change instantaneously, but rather builds up over time in response to an applied voltage.

The inductance of an inductor can be described as the ratio of relative magnetic flux produced by the applied current, to the amount of current passing through it. The higher the inductance, the greater the relative flux, meaning that the higher the current, the more slowly the current builds up, and the lower the current, the more quickly it builds up.

PM1812-R12K-RC is designed to maintain a steady inductance, as its internal structure eliminates the possibility of the inductance drifting. This makes it ideal for stable, HDPs high-frequency DC power supply applications.
