The PMD8PIT’s working principle is based on scattering of light from an object placed in its field of view. The device utilizes a light source, a lens, an integrated detector, a signal processing unit, and an output connector. The light source will generate a light beam that is directed toward the object. When the light beam illuminates the object, part of the light will be reflected and directed to the detector. The detector is responsible for converting the optical signal into an electric signal and this electric signal will be processed by the signal processing unit.

The signal processing unit will compare the electric signal with a reference value and determine if the object is in the sensing range. When the object is in the sensing range, the PMD8PIT will generate a switching output signal (PNP or NPN) to indicate the presence of an object. Depending on the setup, the user can use the switching output signal for triggering certain actions.

There are two main fields of application where the PMD8PIT can be used, namely industrial and automotive applications. In industrial applications, the PMD8PIT is used to detect objects in production processes such as in the woodworking industry, metalworking industry, printing industry, and farming industry.
