A Photomultiplier Tube (PMT) is a form of light sensitive electronic device that is used in various applications. It is similar to an avalanche photodiode (APD) and is a light detector which is capable of detecting lower levels of light than any other photo-detector. PMTs are most commonly used in industrial, scientific and medical applications where sensitive and accurate detection of light is required.

The basic principle of operation behind a PMT is the multiplication of the photoelectrons by an electric field. When photons hit the photocathode of the PMT, photoelectrons are released which is then accelerated towards the electron multiplier, similar to an extended "lantern". As the electrons pass through the multiplier, the electric field in the tubes multiplies the current to create an amplified output signal. This amplified output is used for a variety of signals including medical imaging, x-ray fluoroscopy, industrial detection, and even spark detection.

PMTs are able to detect ultra-low light levels with high precision. Important features of the PMT include high quantum efficiency (QE) and low dark current. The device’s very high QE allows it to detect light levels that are orders of magnitude lower than other sensors. This makes it ideal for applications in astronomy, biology, and medical imaging where very low light magnitudes must be detected. The device’s low dark current also means that little current passes inbetween light pulses, resulting in a lower noise floor and improved signal-to-noise ratio.

PMTs can also operate in several modes depending on the application. In single-photon counting mode, single photons are detected directly and the detector output is proportional to the number of photons detected. For applications such as x-ray fluoroscopy, PMTs are operated in coincidence mode, where two independent matching events must occur in order to produce a valid signal from the detector. For applications requiring the highest possible sensitivity, PMTs can be operated in coincidence mode with multiple anodes and the detection of very low levels of light.

PMTs are a valuable asset in many industrial and scientific applications. They are used to detect very small levels of light in a number of different environments, including medical imaging, x-ray fluoroscopy, industrial and spark detection. The device’s high sensitivity and low noise floor makes it an essential component for a variety of optical sensing applications.
