Its integrated circuitry first converts incident light into current flow by the Photovoltaic effect. This current then passes through a single-stage amplifier and the resulting amplified signal is output from the collector of the phototransistor. The collector current is proportional to the light intensity.The low-fall-time switch application is possible by the PNZ108CL because of its fast response time, which is usually measured in milliseconds. When light strikes the phototransistor’s surface, the resultant current is converted to a voltage and is output from the collector. When the light intensity reaches a certain level, the switch is activated and the circuit is complete.In addition, the PNZ108CL is also used for optical position sensing. This application takes advantage of the phototransistor’s linear response. When the light intensity changes at the receiver, the output signal is proportional to the light intensity difference, resulting in a reliable, accurate, and linear position sensing.The PNZ108CL is widely used in automotive applications due to its excellent light-bar detection performance. This application takes advantage of the PNZ108CL’s improved gain characteristics which allow it to accurately detect both bright and dark light bars.
