Working Principle

The PS2801C-4-A optoisolator consists of two parts: an infrared emitting diode (IED) and a phototransistor (PT). When current flows through the IED, it emits an infrared light signal which is then received by the PT. This causes a current flow in the PT which in turn is transferred to the output circuitry. Essentially, the optoisolator is able to transfer an electrical input signal, across an isolating barrier, to an output signal with a galvanic isolation (no electrical connection) between input and output.

The output signal from the PT is further amplified by an onboard transistor stage to make sure the signal is received loud and clear by the output circuitry. This output circuit is then able to process the signal and act upon it according to the user’s needs. The PS2801C-4-A optoisolator is able to transfer signals up to 5W or up to 200V with a maximum response frequency of 100 kHz.
