DC–DC converters are electronic circuits that change the voltage of a direct current (DC) input source to a different level and form. The PT3402A is a synchronous buck type DC–DC converter featuring wide step-down voltage conversion that can generally reach up to 95% conversion efficiency. It can be economized as a low cost, low standby current, and high efficiency step-down power source.
The PT3402A works with a wide input voltage range of 4.5V to 36V. It also has a fixed 5V regulated output voltage with Low-Noise performance under light-load. With its high frequency operation, it also offers the capability of an ultra-small solution. Furthermore, the PT3402A has full protection functions including output short circuit protection, output overcurrent protection, over-temperature protection, and under-voltage lock protection.
The application field of the PT3402A mainly includes telecom systems, 3G/4G base stations, industrial control and communication systems, notebook PCs, digital cameras, USB chargers, routers, and other related consumer electronic products. This step-down power source is also ideal for handheld instruments, outdoor embedded, battery powered systems, instrumentation and medical equipment, and automotive applications.
The PT3402A is a high efficient synchronous buck type of DC–DC converter that works on the principle of pulse width modulation (PWM). In the synchronous buck mode, the converter uses a power switch device that is able to turn on and off the input voltage. The conduction of the switch is typically controlled by the regulating feedback control. This control system adjusts its output voltage either by changing the turn on and off time of the switch, or by adjusting the signal amplitude.
For the PT3402A to work, the operating frequency (fsw), as well as the on/off duty cycle (d) is pre-set. A diode is also connected to the output to guide the converter to a higher efficiency. When the power switch is switched on, a large current is generated in the inductor, which helps to store the input energy. When the switch is switched off, the stored energy in the inductor will be released, which then passes through the diode into the capacitor. The capacitor then holds the charge and stabilizes the output voltage.
The PT3402A is a suitable choice for wide applications due to its capability of wide step-down voltage efficiewncy, low cost, low standby current, and high efficiency. It works in the principle of PWM and uses an additional switch to control its output voltage, which is then passed through a diode and stored in the capacitor.
