DC DC Converters
DC-DC Converters are electrical devices which change DC voltages from one level to another. Their function is similar to that of conventional AC transformers. PT4143C application field and working principle
The PT4143C is a DC-DC converter controller from Texas Instruments. It is a high efficient monolithic, current mode step-down DC-DC converter controller in TO-220-5L package. It has a wide input voltage range from 8V to 40V and can output adjustable output voltage of 0.8V to 35V with a maximum output current of 4A. It is designed for high efficiency in synchronous rectifiers, active clamp reset forward converters, fly back, SEPICand Cuk converters.
The PT4143C offers an integrated 16V start-up voltage supply with 200mA start-up current for customers to easily implement the auxiliary biasing system of each step-down converter. Additionally, it simplifies system dead time control and enhances EMI filtering by providing a dual soft-start ramp in the under-voltage protection voltage.
PT4143C is designed to run in critical conduction mode (CCM) or discontinuous conduction mode (DCM).
In critical conduction mode, the inductor current is kept above zero. In this mode, the inductor current is regulated to remain constant and the output of the converter is regulated by controlling the average of the rectified input voltage. This mode generally offers higher efficiency than DCM.
In discontinuous conduction mode, the inductor current is allowed to fall to zero during some part of the switching cycle. The output of the converter is regulated by controlling the duty cycle of the switch. This mode generally offers higher light load efficiencies compared to CCM.
The PT4143C incorporates an unique auto-adjust VCC soft-start in over current protection, which smoothes out the high VCC current spike during start up, thus reducing lower radiation and EMI in the environment.
In addition, the PT4143C also has a reset output function. This is very useful to shut down the system under severe fault conditions.
