DC DC Converters

DC-DC converters are a crucial type of power electronic converters used to convert electrical voltage and current, from one form to another. A modern power electronic system uses such converters to step up, step down and/or invert the dc voltage to perform some form of electrical energy conversion. DC-DC converters are broadly classified into two major categories: linear DC-DC converters and switch mode DC-DC converters.

A linear DC-DC converter, also known as a linear regulator, performs power conversion such that the output voltage is equal to the input voltage and the input current is simply regulated. These can be used to provide a constant regulated output voltage from a varying input voltage. It provides a high level of efficiency when operating in the lower power ranges. The output of these regulators is inversely proportional to the changes in the input voltage.

Switch mode DC-DC converters control the voltage and current transferred from the input side to the output side in a continuous manner. These converters employ switching elements and storage elements such as transistors, diodes, inductors and capacitors. These converters are also known as switched mode power supplies (SMPS). Unlike linear DC-DC converters, switch mode DC-DC converters operate with varying switching duty cycles that effectively regulate the output voltage.

The PT6603Q DC-DC converter is a high-efficiency switch mode DC-DC converter, designed with the switching frequency of up to 1MHz and output slew rate up to 15A/us. It provides a wide input voltage range of 4.5V to 15V and a wide output voltage range of 0.6V to 6V. The device is capable of delivering a peak output current of 12A.

The PT6603Q DC-DC converter consists of a reference voltage source, error amplifier, oscillator/clock generator, switch control logic, driver and MOSFET switch. The internal reference voltage provide a stable output voltage tolerance of 3%. The output voltage can be controlled externally by connecting a resistor to the FB pin. The oscillator frequency can be controlled externally by connecting a resistor and capacitor to the soft-start pin.

The DC-DC converter includes low ripple burst mode control to maximize efficiency at no-load and light-load conditions. It also includes cycle-by-cycle current limit with hiccup mode termination for over-current protection. The device features an output over-voltage protection that latches off the converter during over-voltage condition.
