DC-to-DC converters are electronic components and circuits used to convert a direct current (DC) input voltage into a different DC voltage output. The most common type of DC-to-DC converter is a buck-boost converter, also known as a step-up or step-down converter. Other types of DC-to-DC converters include switch-mode power supplies, inverters, and converter-isolators.

PT6653P application field and working principle

PT6653P is a low power, high efficiency synchronous buck converter with integrated power switch and inductor. The device operates at a switching frequency of 300 kHz and 540 kHz typical. The integrated MOSFET power switching stage can handle up to 2.1A of output current with very low switching losses. The device supports input voltage range between 2.2V – 5.5V and has a wide output voltage range of 0.8V – 3.6V, thus allowing DC-DC conversion from a wide input voltage range to the desired output voltage.

The PT6653P uses synchronous rectification which makes use of low on-resistance power MOSFETs to reduce the power losses and improve the efficiency. During conversion, the inductor holds the magnetic field energy and the output can be regulated by varying the duty cycle pulsed on the power switch. The voltage on the power switch is compared to a reference voltage and fed to the error amplifier, and best regulation of the output voltage is achieved by the error amplifier.

The PT6765P features both Write and Read function via 2-wire interface with Hard and Soft start functions available. The device also offers external compensation, Power Good Output and adjustable current limit. The integrated MOSFET power switch can operate between its full efficiency range and configured in Constant Switch On Time (COT) control mode.
