The control IC stabilizes the input voltage and controls the power switch which periodically opens and closes at a given switching frequency. When the power switch closes, the energy stored inside the inductor is built up. When the power switch then opens, the stored energy in the inductor transferred to the output capacitor, providing the output voltage Vout. Finally, the current flowing through the inductor is reduced.
The power transistor of the PT6886C is designed as a current switch, allowing the total power losses to be minimized. For protection, the device utilizes an over-current protection (OCP) circuit which can be set by adjusting a resistor. Additionally, an on-off control system helps reduce the input current to zero when entering sleep mode, so that when the device is not in use, it will automatically shut off and reduce the power consumption.
