DC DC converter is an electronic device which converts the DC supply voltage to the desired output voltage or current in DC format. It has been used in many different applications such as energy conversion, telecommunication, automotive, military, industrial, and consumer applications. In particular, the PT7715A is a high-efficiency, ultra low-noise, switching DC to DC converter specifically designed for telecom applications where an extremely small, compact and low-profile design is needed with high power density.

The PT7715A provides continuous output power up to 15W with current ranging from 0.6A to 6A. It is programmed with ±5% output voltage accuracy for 0.6A to 3A output regulations and ±10% output voltage accuracy over the full 0.6A to 6A range. This DC DC converter is suitable for a wide range of unregulated input voltage ranging from 8Vdc to 60Vdc and offers very high efficiency up to 90%. The PT7715A also has a low no-load operating current, nominal 500µA, allowing telecom equipment makers to extend power supply system life. It is also able to achieve very low output ripple and noise, meeting stringent levels for various telecom applications.

The working principle of the PT7715A involves an DC-DC power conversion circuit based on a high-frequency pulse-width modulation (PWM) technique, and it is combined with a number of power switches, an output filter, and a control circuit. The control circuit modulates the on/off switching of the power switch to regulate the output voltage based on the feedback voltage derived from the output. To enable the desired voltage level, the PWM controller oscillates power switches at a given frequency. When a power switch is opened, the inductor current quickly flows through the output diode for current source model or energy is stored in an output capacitor for the ideal diode. Thus the output voltage is controlled while the input energy is switched periodically.

The PT7715A provides several configurable features such as an adjustable soft start ramps tracking, enabling output voltage to reach the programmed value, minimizing inrush current and reducing component size; Enable/Disable latch and Soft-Off states to storage data, shutting down the system and extending the system life; trickle-charge for backup applications; over-voltage, over-current and over-temperature protection for safety and reliability; and ultrasonic leakage detection for extra safety.
