DC DC Converters: PT7744A application field and working principle

DC-DC converters are a cornerstone in any modern, energy efficient system design. From the basic transformer, to the state-of-the-art integrated switchmode power supplies, application engineers and design engineers have an array of choices to select from. The PT7744A is a feature-rich, cost effective, high power point DC-DC converter. It is well suited for many different power conversion tasks, such as high current LED lighting, telecom base stations, industrial automation and high power motor drive applications. The dynamic headroom control feature integrated into the device enables the efficiency to be optimized depending on the input voltage and the load current.

The Main Features

The PT7744A has the features that make it very versatile for applications requiring a lot of power conditioning and control. It has a wide input voltage range of 9-96V, which enables it to work in a variety of input conditions. It can be used in a synchronous buck configuration at a maximum output current of 8A. It has the capability to operate in a wide range of operating temperatures, from -40°C to +85°C.Another feature is the dynamic headroom control. This allows the device to operate in a more efficient manner under varying loads. For higher current loads, the dynamic headroom can be set to optimize the efficiency by reducing the switching losses. In addition, the device features an adjustable output voltage range of 0.8-VCC and features fixed frequency current mode control system, which eliminates the need for costly compensation components.

How it Works

The PT7744A DC-DC converter works by converting pulsating energy from the input voltage to direct current output in order to achieve power conversion efficiency. The circuit starts by a switching controller IC, which senses the input voltage and sends a signal to the output load when it detects a required voltage level. The output voltage is determined by the output phase current detector circuit. For the PFC circuit, the active power factor correction serves to reduce the input current waveform distortion. The active PFC is achieved through a switching MOSFET based control circuit. The switching MOSFETs are designed to be very efficient in this case, removing the need for an additional active part to sustain the required voltage level, and ensuring that the device will operate at the most efficient possible. The anti-ringing circuit improves the dynamic response performance of the converter, and works by controlling the voltage level at the internal oscillator voltage by adjusting the duty-cycle of the ON-OFF time. This reduces the high frequency ringing that can occur when the input voltage changes. Finally, the output voltage loop control is achieved through a differential amplifier to regulate a reference voltage. This in turn, maintains the required output voltage profile.
