Buck converters reduce input voltage (typically higher voltage) to an output voltage that is lower in magnitude to the input voltage. It works by manipulating input power to the output load substantially in both magnitude and frequency resulting in a regulated output voltage. In PT8A3515BWEX, the switching regulator adopts a pulse-width modulation (PWM) design to convert input voltage to regulated output voltage. Its frequency is determined by a clock circuit, in which the clock signal is generated by a Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) in the reference signal and the signal from the external clock as its inputs. During operation, the PLL will generate a signal with a frequency that is higher than the signal from the external clock and the signal will be converted to a square waveform using comparators. From then on, PT8A3515BWEX uses this square wave signal and PWM controlling technique to gradually change the output voltage until the designed output voltage is achieved. Structure The PT8A3515BWEX contains 4 blocks related to the power management integrated circuit including the power stage, control module, low dropout regulator (LDO) and voltage reference (VREF). The power stage manages the input voltage and output voltage conversion, where under the control of PWM, the output voltage is locked at the preset value. On the other hand, the control module access from a voltage reference and an external clock pulse to control the PWM signal. The low dropout regulator generates a reference voltage that is used to control the ON/OFF of power. From the reference voltage, a signal will be generated and sent to the power stage for controlling ON/OFF of the switch. The external clock will then adjusted the cycle of PWM, allowing synchronization between the power stage and control module to be achieved.
