PTFM04BH222Q2N34BS is a type of temperature sensor, yet not one as common as the thermocouples or resistance thermometers. PTFM04BH222Q2N34BS belongs to a unique family of temperature sensors called PTC thermistors. PTC thermistors, or Positive Temperature Coefficient thermistors, offer a unique application field and working principle compared to other temperature sensors.
PTC thermistors are composed of semiconducting materials, typically ceramic. The property of these materials which allows their use as temperature sensors is their tendency to demonstrate very positive temperature coefficient behaviour. This means that as the ambient temperature rises, the resistance of the thermistor also rises dramatically. This property can be extremely useful in many applications.
One popular application for PTC thermistors is as inrush current limiters. Inrush current is the massive surge of current which flows through electrical circuits when they are initially turned on. This can be dangerous and cause damage to sensitive equipment. PTC thermistors allow these inrush currents to be accurately limited in order to protect sensitive equipment. When the potential causes an initial high current draw, the PTC thermistor will begin to heat up. As the temperature rises, so does the resistance of the thermistor, thus dramatically decreasing the amount of current able to flow through the circuit. This can be very useful in order to protect sensitive electronics from damage or overload.
Another application for PTC thermistors is as self-regulating heaters. This is made possible by the positive temperature coefficient which PTC thermistors exhibit. As the ambient temperature of the PTC thermistor decreases, the resistance of the thermistor decreases along with it. This allows more current to flow through the thermistor, and consequently raises the temperature of the body of the thermistor. When the temperature of the thermistor reaches a certain point, the resistance of the thermistor increases, and the amount of current flowing through diminishes until the desired temperature is maintained. This is a very useful way to maintain very accurate and consistent temperatures in devices and applications.
The unique behavior of PTC thermistors makes them extremely useful tools for sensing and regulating temperature in a wide variety of applications. They can be used as inrush current limiters or self-regulating heaters as previously mentioned, but can also be used for a wide variety of other applications in order to accurately measure or maintain temperature.
