Rotary Potentiometers

A rotary potentiometer, also known as a rotary knob, is a three-terminal resistive device used to measure angular position. It has a circular track, one terminal located in the center, and other two terminals located at the ends of the track. It is usually made of a resistive material, such as carbon, cermet, or conductive plastic. The resistive material interacts with fixed contacts that are activated by a wiper acting as a contact arm. As the rotary knob is rotated, the contact arm moves across the track, thus adjusting the electrical resistance between the two outer terminals.

Rheostats

A rheostat is a two-terminal, variable-resistance device. Usually, it consists of a resistive track, a contact arm, and two terminals connected to the ends of the resistive track. By turning the contact arm, the user can adjust the amount of resistance between the two terminals, thus enabling the user to control the amount of current flowing in a circuit. As with a potentiometer, the contact arm of a rheostat interacts with the resistive track and can be moved to adjust the resistance. Unlike potentiometers, however, the contact arm of a rheostat does not remain in direct contact with the resistive material at all times, so the amount of resistance can be varied over a much larger range.

The PTR902 is a high-precision, brushless rotary potentiometer with a life of 1 million cycles. It has a maximum resolution of 10 bits and can be used in both digital and analog systems. It is capable of continuous tracking angular positions up to 0.1494 mm, and the total range is about 450 degrees. The PTR902 consists of a resistive track and three terminals. When the knob is turned, the contact arm slides along the resistive track, thereby changing the resistance between two of the terminals. This change in resistance can be detected and used to measure the angular position of the knob.
