Most Trimmer Potentiometers are designed so that the contact point cannot be moved beyond the limits of the resistive track, preventing damage caused by attempting to increase the resistance beyond the maximum. Furthermore, the contact point is often spring-loaded to keep it in contact with the resistive track, allowing for repeatable adjustments.
The typical physical construction of Trimmer Potentiometers consists of a metallic case that holds the substrate carrying the resistive trace and the contact point. The contact point is connected to a plastic or metal shaft or knob that turns to adjust the resistance. Mechanical stops can be installed to prevent the contact point from being adjusted beyond its intended range.
