AC DC ConvertersAC-DC conversion involves switching the input voltage between two values (annular and rectified current) to enable an efficient transfer of power from the AC supply to the DC load. This type of conversion is of great benefit in applications such as electronics, computers, and automotive systems. In the case of an automotive system, battery charging is one of the primary applications of AC-DC converters wherein AC current is efficiently converted to DC current to power the vehicle’s electrical system.In ACDC converters, one of the more popular techniques for transforming AC current to DC current is known as the PW1.5 (Power Wagon 1.5) technology. The PW1.5 method utilizes two distinct stages: a pre-regulator and a power conversion stage. The pre-regulator stage takes in the raw AC input and converts it to a lower DC voltage required by the power conversion stage. This provides a stable level of power that is used to run the power conversion stage. In turn, the power conversion stage takes the output from the pre-regulator and further rectifies it to produce the desired DC output. The working principle of the PW1.5 technology involves first converting the AC input to a DC waveform using a full-wave bridge rectifier. This rectified waveform is then filtered using an inductor-capacitor network. This stage acts as the pre-regulator where the output is regulated by detecting its output ripple voltage and adjusting the power output accordingly. The next stage is the power conversion stage where the transformed DC input is further rectified using two controlled switches in order to produce a constant DC output. The PW1.5 controller controls the switching of the two switches in such a way so as to reduce the current ripple from the output. Finally, the output from the power conversion stage is filtered using another LC network to produce a clean DC output. This DC output can then be used to power the load. The PW1.5 technique is widely used in various applications such as battery charging, motor drives, low-voltage lighting, and automotive power supplies. The ability to regulate the output voltage and control the current ripple provides an efficient and reliable solution for powering various applications. Additionally, the use of the two-stage conversion process makes the PW1.5 technology a cost effective choice for AC-DC conversions.
