SAW filters are installed on printed circuit boards (PCB) either in the form of monolithic integrated circuits or surface mount devices. This article focuses on the PX1004 quad SAW filter, its application field and working principle.
The PX1004 is a Quad SAW filter that was designed to suppress unwanted frequencies, in particular in the mobile phone market. The filter is suitable for applications such as TV and FM radio demodulators, base-stations, mobile phones and Receivers.
The PX1004 is a miniature 5.0 x 5.0 x 0.85 mm sized low cost quad SAW filter, designed specifically for the mobile phone market. It has a very good Temperature Stability of ± 1 dB. The PX1004 operates over a frequency range of 21 GHz with a passband response of 0.22 MHz at the point of 1 dB.
SAW filters work based on the properties of the special piezoelectric substrate and process used in their construction. Piezo materials are very efficient transducers of electrical signals to mechanical vibrations. Piezo substrate is made of two different crystal layers; one of the layers acts as an amplifier for the signal while the other layer acts as a transducer.
The process used to create a SAW filter involves bonding two layers of metallic material to the surface of the substrate. These metallic layers have an array of metallic segments known as ‘prongs’. When the electrical signal passes through these prongs, vibration is created on the surface of the substrate. These vibrations are amplified by the piezo material and cause additional vibrations in neighbouring prongs, thus generating a waveform.
The waveform created in this way is then detected by the other layer of piezo-electric material and converted to an electrical signal. This electrical signal is then amplified and filtered to create the desired frequency. The frequency can be adjusted by changing the number or spacing of the prongs on the metallic layers, as well as by changing the thickness or shape of the piezo-electric layer.
The PX1004 uses a range of tuning parameters, such as the frequency, power level, peak and notch frequency, bandwidth and harmonic response to achieve the desired results. It uses two quad filters, one for the oscillator (receive) frequency and the other for the IF (transmit) frequency. The filters provide very good Ringing suppression and very low passband distortion.
In conclusion, the PX1004 is a low cost quad SAW filter that is designed for use in the mobile phone market. It operates over a frequency range of 21 GHz with a passband response of 0.22 MHz at the point of 1 dB. The PX1004 uses a range of tuning parameters, such as the frequency, power level, peak and notch frequency, bandwidth and harmonic response to achieve the desired results. It provides very good ringing suppression and excellent passband distortion characteristics.
