DC-DC converters are devices that serve as an intermediary between a power source and a load, and convert the direct current from one voltage level to another. The R12P09D/P/R8, a component from the STMicroelectronics “Cool-USE” family, is a synchronous buck DC-DC converter which, by using both pulse width modulation and phase shift techniques, is able to convert a variable DC input voltage to a precisely-regulated output voltage.The Cool-USE family of DC-DC converters is designed to provide high power conversion efficiency under various usage conditions. The device utilizes an architecture which combines both coding and analog control techniques, enabling it to deliver even higher power transfer efficiency compared to traditional non-synchronous DC/DC converter solutions.The R12P09D/P/R8 consists of two main components: the power MOSFET switch and the controller. The power MOSFET, a low cost silicon transistor, is responsible for distributing power from the input to the output while the controller regulates the frequency of the pulse width signal so that it is matched to the load current. This allows the MOSFET to switch at optimal frequencies for high conversion efficiency.To account for changing load conditions, the R12P09D/P/R8 comes equipped with an Adaptive On-Time Control & Frequency-Mode modulation system which automatically adjusts the frequency and duty cycle of the switching signal in response to changing load conditions, enabling high efficiency operation over a wide range of output voltages and loads. The R12P09D/P/R8 can be used in a wide variety of applications, ranging from consumer electronic products to industrial grade power supplies. Some of the key features of this device include a wide input voltage range between 4V and 36V, step-down output voltage of 1.5V to 22V with a maximum current rating of 9A, and a switching frequency of up to 1.2MHz.In addition to its high efficiency, the R12P09D/P/R8 offers features such as soft start, internal compensation, short-circuit protection, thermal shutdown protection and over-current protection. It is also Highly EMI compliant and hence, well-suited for space-constrained applications. In summary, the R12P09D/P/R8 is a high efficiency synchronous buck DC-DC converter with wide input voltage range and a wide variety of safety and EMI features, making it ideal for use in consumer, industrial and automotive power supply systems.
