DC DC Converters R12P09D/P Application Field and Working Principle
DC DC converters are devices designed to convert input voltage to a stabilized output voltage, by converting either from low voltage, high current to a higher voltage, lower current or from high voltage, low current to a lower voltage, higher current. This DC/DC conversion technology is used in many electronics appliances, including smartphones, laptops and tablets. The R12P09D/P converter series is manufactured by Vicor Corporation and is used to convert 12 V dc input to 9V dc output.
The R12P09D/P converter consists of two main components, namely the switching regulator and the output transformer. The switching regulator part consists of an integrated circuit (IC), which performs the switching, and the driver transistor, which drives the switching action. This in turn controls a power transformer with a secondary winding that produces the 9V dc output.

The R12P09D/P converter allows a wide input voltage range of 7V to 18V, with a wide temperature range from -40°C to +90°C. It has an output voltage of 9V with an astonishing efficiency of nearly 95% at full-load. The input ripple current is usually between 1.8A and 150mA & the switching frequency of the power transformer is set to 65KHz. This power converter is very reliable and contains several short circuit protection functions, including current or cycle slew-rate limiting, dead-time control, soft-start, over-voltage protection, under-voltage protection and temperature shutdown.
