These are known as discrete LEDs, and the R3GDL is an example of this technology.

When a different condition is detected, the control signal can be changed to activate a different LED; for instance, when the product is in low power mode, the D2 signal is active and the green LED will be illuminated.

In addition to the simple indicator applications, the R3GDL can also be used to control a group of LEDs which are used to signal a specific condition. For instance, when a product is in the process of charging, the R3GDL can be programmed to flash the red, green, and blue LEDs alternatively in a repeating pattern as an indication of progress.
