AC/DC converters form the backbone of many power systems, providing essential and reliable power control and energy distribution. The RAC10-3.3SA is a rectifier-automatic control type of AC/DC converter for supplying convenient regulated precision power. Its main application field is for supplying loads of low power non-sensitive field, and also for controlling of reactive loads such as welders. The RAC10-3.3SA is designed to provide an output voltage of DC 3.3V ± 10%, with a power output of up to 10 watts. It contains six thyristors, two rectifying diodes, four resistors, one capacitor, and an over-voltage protection circuit. The thyristors are connected in an asymmetrical bridge configuration to provide the necessary AC/DC conversion.

In operation, the AC power supply is connected to the input terminals of the converter. The current passes through the two rectifying diodes, forming alternating half cycles of positive and negative DC voltage. The four resistors and one capacitor form a low-pass filter, suppressing any harmonics present in the input voltage and thus providing a clean sine wave. This filtered current is then passed through the thyristors, forming a regulated, symmetrical DC voltage at the output.

The output voltage of the RAC10-3.3SA is controlled by the over-voltage protection circuit. Whenever the input voltage exceeds the maximum voltage rating of the converter, the over-voltage protection circuit senses the over-voltage condition and adjusts the firing angle of the thyristors to ensure the output voltage stays within the safe operating range. This prevents any damage to the load or other components connected to the output of the converter.

Apart from voltage regulation, the RAC10-3.3SA also includes two additional functions: overload protection and over-temperature protection. The overload protection feature monitors the current drawn and cuts off the output voltage if the current exceeds the maximum rating. The over-temperature protection feature is a self-resetting device that monitors the temperature of the thyristors, and shuts down the output voltage if the temperature reaches a certain threshold. As a result, the RAC10-3.3SA provides a reliable and safe power supply in applications where precision, voltage regulation and safety are of paramount concern.
