The REG710EVM-5 evaluation board is designed for both DC/DC and AC/DC (off-line) power supplies. This evaluation board is especially valuable for the development of high efficiency power supplies. It delivers a regulated output of +5 Vdc at 5 A and can accept input voltage ranges from 9.2 to 25 V, while the output voltage can be adjusted from 0 V to 5 Vdc. The four layers of the board have been designed to provide an optimal path for the high current output, ensuring thermal and electrical balance. The REG710EVM-5 uses the latest generation of a monolithic integrated power converter, the REG710, which combines state-of-the-art power conversion topology with advanced power control features.

The control block that this IC is based on implements a traditional voltage-mode (VM) control scheme. Besides, it uses an optimistic average-current-mode (ACM) where a large enough sample interval is used for the inductor current waveform. The VM control block has features that help to maximize the power conversion efficiency, such as power optimizers, optimized valley-fill, and a Dual-N compensation. By using a flexible control structure, the IC is able to maintain excellent line and load regulation, an optimized transient response, and a low output noise.

The REG710 can also provide protection against load, short-circuit, and over-temperature conditions.
