AC DC Converters are a widely used form of electrical conversion technology. They are commonly used in industrial, consumer, and commercial applications, where they are used to convert alternating current (AC) power from an electricity grid, or a solar source, into direct current (DC) that can be used to power electric devices such as appliances or computers. RFE160048/S is a kind of low-cost AC-DC converter that is highly efficient and reliable, with a wide input voltage range, output voltage adjustment, high insulation performance, etc.The RFE160048/S AC-DC converter has a wide input voltage range from 85-264VAC, up to 8A maximum output and provides a stable output voltage with over-voltage, current limiting, and over-temperature protection. The built-in active power factor correction (PFC) ensures high efficiency and low standby power consumption. The size and weight are relatively small and light, making it ideal for mobile, energy-saving applications.The working principle of RFE160048/S AC-DC converter can be divided into two steps. Firstly, it uses an active PFC (power factor correction) circuit which helps to ensure the best power factor when input and output current are different. This will also optimize power consumption and reduce distortion. Secondly, it utilizes a DC to DC conversion process which is comprised of two stages- a boost stage and a buck stage. The boost stage will raise the input voltage while the buck stage reduces the input voltage in order to generate the desired output voltage.The boost stage utilizes two switching MOSFETs to increase the input voltage, a Schottky diode to rectify the input AC, a transformer, and an inductor. The Schottky diode allows current only when it is in forward bias position, while the two MOSFET transistors alternately switch between "on" and "off" positions, controlling the frequency of the input AC. By doing so, the transformer induces a voltage proportional to the input voltage. This voltage is then filtered and regulated by the inductor and finally the output voltage is generated.The buck stage also utilizes two switching MOSFETs to reduce the input voltage, a Schottky diode to rectify the input AC, a transformer, and an inductor. However, unlike the boost stage, in this stage, the current is controlled by the MOSFET switching in the reverse direction. Through this process, the peak of the input AC voltage is detected, and the output voltage is adjusted accordingly.To sum up, the RFE160048/S AC-DC converter uses an active PFC circuit and a two-stage DC to DC conversion process to convert an AC input voltage to DC output voltage. Its wide input voltage range, output voltage adjustment, and high insulation performance, make it suitable for various energy-saving applications.
