As such, this type of potnetiometer is often referred to as a linear potnetiometer.On the other hand, rheostats work by allowing the current to flow in a non-linear fashion through the variable resistor. This means that the resistance increases at a different rate depending on the amount of current. As such, this type of rheostat is often referred to as a non-linear rheostat.In terms of applications, both of these components can be used for a variety of purposes. Potnetiometers are often used as a voltage regulator in power supplies. This means that the voltage supplied to a device can be accurately controlled by adjusting the potnetiometer.Rheostats, on the other hand, can be used to control the speed of a motor or the resistance of a light source.
