Rotary Potentiometers

Rotary potentiometers, commonly referred to as pots, are electromechanical transducers that provide a variable resistance to the flow of electric current. They are constructed using a circular metal disk or ‘pot’ with a contact. The contact moves radially inwards and outwards in relation to the direction of the current. As a result, the resistance of the pot varies in relation to the distance between the contact and the axis of rotation.

Rheostats

A rheostat is an electrical device that is used to control the flow of electric current or voltage. It’s composed of a wire or resistor that can be physically moved to adjust the value of the resistance, and therefore the magnitude of the current or voltage. It is most commonly used to vary the speed of a motor, adjust voltage in an electrical power system, and regulate the brightness of a light bulb.

RKS300 Application Field and Working Principle

The RKS300 is a rotary/rheostat potentiometer designed primarily for use as a motor speed controller. It is a three-wire system consisting of a voltage source, a power resistor and a drive circuit. It has all of the elements of a typical rotary/ rheostat system: the drive circuit includes an internal sensor, which measures the current being drawn from the power resistor; and the power resistor is typically a high-value resistor (typically including resistors from 10-150 Ohm) that can be adjusted for different levels of current.

When the rotary/rheostat pot is adjusted, its internal sensor measures the amount of current drawn and adjusts the voltage source accordingly. The voltage source is then fed back into the system, providing a voltage between 0 and 10 VDC that adjusts the motor speed. The user can thus adjust the speed of the motor with precision and control.

The RKS300 is designed to provide both rotary and rheostat functions. The rheostat function works like a traditional rheostat, relying on the current from the voltage source to adjust the resistance. The rotary function, however, works by using the power resistor to produce a stable voltage or current which the internal sensor then measures in order to adjust the motor speed. This provides a more accurate and precise speed adjustment.

The RKS300 is suitable for many different applications where precise motor speed control is required. In addition to motor speed control, it can be used to control the speed of pumps, fans, compressors and other machines. It is also suitable for use in HVAC systems and automated processes. Moreover, it can be used to adjust the intensity of LED lighting, or even used as a dimmer switch for incandescent lights.
