Diodes - Rectifiers - Single - RM 10Z Application Field and Working Principle
In the modern world, a full-wave rectifier, such as the RM 10Z, is widely used in the field of power electronics for inverter, switching power supplies etc. It is a distinctive PN junction diode that belongs to the vast family of rectifier diodes.
The RM 10Z has a very important characteristic feature of being a very efficient full-wave rectifier. The advantages of using the RM 10Z include its high diode efficiency, low forward voltage drop, and fast switching time speed. The three phase RM 10Z support obtain very high levels of power factor rating and harmonic cancellation using the three-phase bridges.
The full-wave rectifier, RM 10Z, is a type of PN junction diode that can rectify both the positive and negative cycle of the AC wave to obtain DC voltage. It consists of two PN junction diodes connected back to back. The negative junction of the diode is connected to the positive terminal of the alternating current source, while its positive junction is connected to the negative terminal of the AC source. The two diodes together create a closed loop which acts as a valve for the AC current.
The working principle of the RM 10Z full-wave rectifier mainly rests on the fact that during the positive cycle of the AC voltage, the diode PN junction offers a low resistance path and hence the current flows forward through it. During the negative cycle, the same junction offers a high resistance path and hence the current cannot flow forward and is blocked. However, if the same junction is connected in its reverse direction, then it offers a low resistance path and hence the current can flow in reverse. Thus, when the two diodes are connected backward to each other, the blocking effect of the diode in one direction is balanced by the low resistance effect of the same diode in the reverse direction.
Due to this, whenever the AC voltage is applied to the RM 10Z, the two diodes connected in opposite directions close the loop and the current flows in the loop uninterrupted. As a result, the output of the RM 10Z is a continuous, unidirectional DC voltage which is the rectified form of the AC voltage. The only difference between the rectified voltage and the input AC voltage is the absence of the negative half cycle of the AC voltage.
The application of RM 10Z is mainly in the field of power electronics where it is used to construct switched mode and high frequency inverters, switching power supplies, high frequency power converters, motor and machinery control circuits, etc. It can handle more current load as compared to other diodes due to its improved diode efficiency and can operate at higher frequencies due to its low forward voltage drop and fast switching speed.
