Common mode chokes are among the most effective means of providing high-frequency noise suppression or filtering. It is a device that is designed to reject common-mode interference, that is, signals that cause interference on a differential signal line as opposed to a single conductor. The RN222-1-02-33 is a type of common-mode choke, most commonly used in motor applications, with a particular emphasis on medical and automotive applications.
The RN222-1-02-33 is designed for applications where the suppression or noise reduction is necessary to maintain an accurate and reliable signal. It is designed to be inserted into the circuit to minimize the transmission of common-mode noise and eliminate the effects of common-mode interference. The chokes are most effective when used on circuit board and printed circuit board runs, as they can provide both common and differential mode noise suppression.
The working principle of a common mode choke is based on the fact that the electromagnetic field in the common-mode noise situation exists between two electrical conductors. The conductors form the primary and secondary coils of a transformer, with one of the cores of the transformer connected to the pertinent terminals of the supply line, the other core connected to the pertinent terminals of the load line. The RN222-1-02-33 has a winding arrangement of two parallel wires in one core, wound around a magnetically permeable core, to create a strong magnetic field. This magnetic field creates resistance to the flow of common mode noise through the coils.
The degree of noise suppression is related to the number of turns on the primary or secondary, the coil design, the value of inductance, the operating frequency and the cable capacitance. The RN222-1-02-33 usually feature a capacitance rating of 120μF, a high saturation flux density rating of 1.3 Tesla, and maximum DC current of 180 mA. It can be used on both AC and DC supplies and operates on a range of frequencies from 400 kHz to 1.4 MHz.
In most cases, the RN222-1-02-33 has a bandwidth up to 500 kHz, an inductance range of 1 to 8 uH, and an impedance of 3.6 mOhm at 10 kHz, with a maximum voltage of 20 VAC/DC. The maximum operating temperature for this common mode choke is 140°C, with a maximum rated power of 0.6 W. Most RN222-1-02-33 chokes are rated for a maximum current of 6A (AC/DC), and a maximum operating frequency of 1.2 kHz.
Common mode chokes are preferred for applications where both common-mode and differential-mode interference must be reduced. These chokes are particularly useful in motor applications, because they can reject both common-mode and differential-mode noise. The RN222-1-02-33 features excellent noise suppression, a high inductance range, compact size and can handle very high currents, making it suitable for a wide variety of applications, from motor and automotive to medical.
