ROHM-STEPMO_EVK_208 is an evaluation board designed by ROHM for three-phase stepper motor control. This board is part of the expansion boards, daughter cards, serving as a bridge for the users to verify the performance of a system which employs ROHM’s products and software. It can be used as a reference design to develop their own motor control application in larger systems such as machine tools and industrial equipment.
ROHM-STEPMO_EVK_208 is embedded with a R8C/36 series 8-bit single-chip microcontroller and a built-in three-phase unipolar driver IC BD6211FV. This evaluation board is provided with a CAN-2 interface that supports CANopen communication protocol. ROHM-STEPMO_EVK_208 supports CANopen protocol, allowing users to develop their own applications such as torque control, speed control, position control and so on.

Working Principle: The board is designed such that the R8C/36 Series 8-bit single-chip microcontroller is the master of the system. It has 8 analog inputs used for analogue calibration of the motor characteristics. The host controls the four linear drivers, allowing the motor to move according to the pre-programmed PWM signals. The board includes a terminal block for the CAN-2 interface, allowing the user to access their CAN network. The user can further expand the capabilities of the system by connecting additional driving circuits, allowing for motor torque control and other applications.
The board is powered by regulated DC voltage, from 5V to 24 VDC. The in-built power supply is protected against over-voltage and under-voltage. The power supply uses a low voltage spike suppressor, limiting the transient voltage to the motor and the board. Its fast response time prevents the motor from damage.
Safety features are built into the board, including over-current protection and over-speed protection. The over-current protection prevents the driver IC from exceeding a pre-designated operating current, ensuring the safety of the whole system. The over-speed protection promptly halts the motor rotation, in case of an incorrect program input, protecting the user and the motor from any unwanted situation. These features provide a reliable and safe system, even in environments which have temperature fluctuation or uncertain power supply.
ROHM-STEPMO_EVK_208 is a low-cost three-phase stepper motor control evaluation board tailored for engineers.
