TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressors) are components used to protect items such as semiconductor integrated circuits, and power supplies against voltage transients such as lightning, ESD, and/or power inductive loads from damaging due to excessively high voltage, current, or both. They are designed to divert damaging transient over-voltage or disruptive ESD away from delicate circuit components that can\'t handle such high electrical duress. Typically, TVS devices are arranged in series (not parallel) with the protected circuit. Varistors (Metal Oxide Varistors - MOVs), are voltage dependent, non-linear resistors, used for transient voltage suppression.

ROV07-431K-S is one of the many metal oxide varistors offered by ROHM Semiconductor. It is a bidirectional suppressor with a unidirectional peak pulse voltage range 270-430 V. It belongs to the ROV07 series, which is designed for IEC 61000-4-5, Level 3 surge immunity applications. The ROV07 series is built with an enhanced Electro Magnetic Compatibility (EMC) structure that does not require external capacitor to attenuate the ESD generated in the circuit, in order to meet IEC61000-4-2 Level 4 discharge requirements.

But when the voltage is higher than the maximum clamping voltage, the resistance of the varistor decreases and it acts as a short circuit across the AC line, thus diverting the transient surge away from the protected component.
