TVS (transient voltage suppressors) are often an afterthought when designing a new system. They are an essential part of the protection scheme for sensitive components from electrical discharges, especially power surge. Transients are high power pulses that can fit in the power distribution of a system and cause shorts or over-voltages which can damage delicate electronics.
