Transient voltage suppressors (TVS)are components used to protect electrical and electronic circuits from voltage spikes. These voltage spikes can be caused by lightning, electrostatic discharge (ESD), failing AC mains power, or surges due to unbalanced power phases. These spikes can potentially damage the sensitive components in the circuit by permanently altering the electronic state of the component. A TVS is an active device which can withstand high voltages and provide safe current diversion away from the load. The three main types of TVS products are Varistors, Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs), and Silicon Avalanche Diodes (SADs).
ROV20-361K-S is a type of Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV) manufactured by Littelfuse. It is a highly reliable, RoHS compliant, surface-mount component with high surge current capability. The ROV20-361K-S is a round, discrete variable resistance device, containing Zinc Oxide elements which are used to absorb transient voltages. It features an instantaneous response to transient voltage changes, making it ideal for use in circuitry where quick response times are desired. The device is designed to be electrically neutral, meaning that it does not require any external components for connection to the circuit board.
The MOVs main application field is in overvoltage protection applications. It is commonly used to protect equipment and components from power surges and voltage spikes caused by ESD and lightning. The MOV provides a pathway through the device for overvoltage spikes, allowing them to be safely diverted away from the circuit board and downstream components. It also has the capability to withstand high surge currents which would damage unprotected components. The MOVs non-linearity characteristics makes it suitable for use in wavefront lightning protection applications where its ability to “clip” transient waves can protect downstream components. The device is also suitable for low voltage signal isolation applications, eliminating or reducing ground loops in the circuit.
The primary working principle of an MOV is based on its variable resistance feature. The device contains Zinc Oxide (ZnO) particles, which are normally in an insulating state. When a voltage spike or surge is applied to the device, it causes a change in the ZnO particles, making them temporarily conductive. This causes a partial or complete short circuit between the two terminals of the device, allowing excess voltage to be diverted away from the protected load. The device will return to its initial non-conductive state when the spike or surge is removed.
The ROV20-361K-S is a high performance MOV with an operating voltage of 20V (peak) and a rated impulse current of 350A (8/20µs). It has a maximum operating temperature of 125°C and offers excellent surge handling capability in a small footprint surface mount package. The device is ideally suited for protection of sensitive electronic components from damaging voltage transients and power surges.
