The RPM871-E2 is an IrDA Transceiver Module specialized in providing low-power IrDA physical layer solutions. This module makes it possible for serial optical communication at both 9.6 kbps and 115.2 kbps speeds in a range up to 1 meter.

The module is available in a compact 5.6mm × 5.6mm package and is an ideal solution for all IrDA enabled devices. This module enables basic support for serial optical communication in a range up to 1 meter.

This module uses an infrared LED used to light up an invisible light beam. When this light beam runs over an object, the object reflects the light beam. This reflected light beam is received by an integrated photo transistor detector within the module. Data is hence then transmitted when the light beam is transmitted and received by the photo transistor. This process is known as modulation.

The RPM871-E2 module features a wide variety of functions for serial optical communication such as data packet transmission and reception, connection control, low-power mode support, automatic data rate selection and on-chip voltage regulator.

The module is powered from a single voltage level between 2.7V and 5.5V. This module supports asynchronous serial data transfer rate of up to 115.2 kbps and a full duplex communication using Manchester coded modulation. The active supply current is typically 40 mA at 5V voltage source with 10 mA no load current.

The module supports two types of SERDES function, namely 3-wire UART and IrSYNC. In IrSYNC mode, when using a UART serial communication path, the 3-wire UART serial interface allows SPI communication with up to 4 Mbps. When using the IrSYNC protocol, the serial interface can be used with the data rate of up to 250 Kbps.

When using with the IrSYNC protocol, transmission power, CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Check) checking and automatic data recognition functions are supported. This module also supports multiple operating modes such as Idle, Transmit, Reception and Sleep. The Idle mode puts the module in low-power consumption mode while the Transmit and Reception modes are used when the module is actively transmitting or receiving data. The Sleep mode is also enabled to keep the module in a low-power consumption state for long periods.

The RPM871-E2 module is optimal for a wide range of applications such as consumer electronics, medical, industrial, health and medical monitoring, gaming, security, automotive, and home automation systems. This module is especially suited for providing IrDA enabled serial optical communication.
