Point of Load converters (POLs) are essential components in power management system design. The RT9164C-33GQW is an integrated linear regulator controller (LRC) designed to provide point of load regulation in distributed power systems. It combines a wide input range, high efficiency and robust performance into a tiny 4-mm × 4-mm QFN-16 package. This application note details the RT9164C-33GQW’s features, application field and working principle.

Features

The RT9164C-33GQW is a low noise, low dropout linear regulator controller for point-of-load applications. It is capable of sourcing up to 3A of load current from a wide input voltage range as low as 1.5V and up to 16V. The device includes internal power MOSFETs, voltage regulation, input UVLO protection and short-circuit protection. The device also features an adjustable output voltage to support different output voltage levels, as well as both frequency foldback and current limit protections. Additionally, the RT9164C-33GQW supports external synchronization.

The RT9164C-33GQW is also featured with power saving modes, programmable softstart and output voltage tracking, over-temperature protection, and both active high and low enable inputs. Either fixed-frequency or continuous-conduction-mode is available.

Application Field

The versatile RT9164C-33GQW is ideally suited for a variety of demanding point-of-load (POL) applications such as low-cost servers, servers, mobile base stations, and other distributed power systems. It is also ideal for systems that require several different voltages and limited board space, such as notebook, tablet, and desktop computers.

Working Principle

The RT9164C-33GQW uses an internal low-dropout linear regulator controller with wide input range, high efficiency and robust performance. The device provides a voltage control loop and features an adjustable output voltage to support different output voltage levels, as well as both frequency foldback and current limit protections. Additionally, the RT9164C-33GQW support external synchronization and power MOSFETs.

The RT9164C-33GQW can be configured to operate in either fixed-frequency mode or continuous-conduction-mode. In Fixed-Frequency mode, an external clock is required for synchronization. The device\'s current-limit protection can be set via an external resistor and its frequency foldback protection can be set via an external capacitor.

In Continuous-Conduction-Mode (CCM), the RT9164C-33GQW operates in “Power Saving” or “Light Load” modes to reduce power dissipation and extend battery life. Both Power Saving and Light Load modes can be enabled or disabled depending on the application requirements. The RT9164C-33GQW also features an adjustable softstart and output voltage tracking.

The RT9164C-33GQW offers over-temperature protection and both active high and low enable inputs. The device contains both frequency foldback and current limit protection and allows for external synchronization. Its versatile design makes it suitable for high-performance, high-efficiency point-of-load applications in a variety of distributed power systems.
