PTC resettable fuses are a type of current-limiting fuses, designed for circuit protection. Based on the principle of self-resetting polymeric positive temperature coefficient (PPTC) that is used in this fuse, these fuses are designed to provide reliable circuit protection with fast fuse operation, which could reset after short circuit. RUE500 is such kind of PTC fuse, which contains Radial leads, Under 2.500 Amps, and Thermal Cutoffs with a mechanical flag.

Application Field of RUE500

RUE500 is essentially used as a discrimination fuse, allowing current flow until reaching an over current state. After exceeding a certain current value, it will open the circuit and protect the dysfunctional component. This type of fuse is widely used in motor protection, photovoltaic arrays, automation installation, medical equipments, industrial controllers, instrumentation and other electronic circuits whose current exceeds the rated value. RUE500 is also suitable to be used in other electronic equipment, where it could provide over-current protection.

Working Principle of RUE500

The working principle of RUE500 can be attributed to the PPTC effect, which has various applications, especially when combined with switching and/or connection means, allowing a device to be protected from dangerous over-current conditions. This principle is based in the very simple idea of using a polymer, which has at a specific temperature, a temperature coefficient of resistance higher than zero. This means that when a certain temperature is reached, the resistance of the PPTC increases rapidly, causing a current-limiting effect until the over-temperature is dissipated and the device returns to its original resistance.

The RUE500 is essentially a combination of two mechanical components: the plunger and the metal cast housing. When placed in the cast housing, the plunger contacts the bimetallic element, which is in turn connected to the device\'s heat sink. When the current exceed the rated value for the fuse, the bimetallic element expands, causing the plunger to move away from the cast housing and open the circuit. When the current is reduced to a low level, the bimetallic element contracts again and the plunger goes back to the housing, reconnecting the circuit.

RUE500 provides a reliable level of safety to the circuits it is protecting since its PPTC effect makes sure that the over-current will never exceed the rated value. This allows for fast detection and tripping of the fuse, without the need for external mechanical handling. Moreover, the fact that its reset-action is of thermal nature allows for high cycle life of the fuse.
