TVS – Varistors, MOVs – are a class of semiconductors specifically designed to suppress electrical noise or “spikes” within an electronic system. The RV391K05T is one such device, and its application field and working principle are explored in this article.
RV391K05T is a bidirectional voltage suppressor. It can handle up to 1kW of ESD power, withstand over-voltage conditions up to 500V, and is designed for use in USB 2.0, IEEE-1394, and Serial ATA (SATA) interfaces. It is used to protect equipment from ESD, lightning, over-voltage, and other transient voltage events. It provides a low-impedance path between the I/O lines for inductive ringing suppression. The RV391K05T offers fast response time, low clamping voltages, low capacitance, and high surge current handling capability.
RV391K05T’s working principle is based on the reverse-biased avalanche breakdown phenomenon. When a voltage is applied to the device, electrons in the depletion region are accelerated by the electric field until they reach sufficient energy to impact and ionize the surrounding atoms, inducing further electron carriers. This process leads to huge current flows between the active region and the reverse-biased region. This abrupt avalanche current suppression reduces overvoltage spikes. At the same time, the current-blocking capacitance of the device is minimized and prevents current disturbances.
RV391K05T has broad application areas. It is suitable for mobile phone interfaces, VGA interfaces, S-video interfaces, DVI interfaces, automated office equipment, electricity meters, compact TV (CTV), plasma and digital versatile disk (DVD) players, video game consoles, LAN and other network devices, serial data interfaces, and can also be used for over-voltage protection for general ICs.
The RV391K05T is an efficient device for ESD protection and voltage transient suppression. By quickly diverting current away from the delicate circuitry it helps to protect against physical and electrical damage caused by surge voltages and other transient events. It is a cost-effective addition for any system that requires robustness and reliability.
