PTC Resettable Fuses, RXEF160K-2 Application Field and Working Principle

PTC Resettable Fuses, including RXEF160K-2, are known as polymeric positive temperature coefficient fuses or PPTC and they can be applied in numerous electrical and electronic applications. The RXEF160K-2 is a resettable fuse that provides over-current protection with a fast response and high user-friendliness. The RXEF160K-2 is one of the leading PTC resettable fuses that are used in current-sensing applications.

The PTC resettable fuse design contains two parts. The first is a positive temperature coefficient element that is connected in series between the power source and the load. The second is an auxiliary circuit, also known as a “trip element” that are connected across the power line. When the current through the central element or overload exceeds a predetermined value, the trip element causes the central element to heat up and its temperature rises. This temperature rise is transferred to the plastic encapsulation of the fuse element, causing it to swell up (or expand) and break the electrical connection.

In order to reset the RXEF160K-2, the cause of the over-current must be removed and the housing must be cooled to ambient temperature before the fuse can be reset. When the temperature of the fuse element drops to a lower threshold (below its maximum temperature) the plastic housing of the element contracts and restores the electrical connection, thus re-enabling the power flow.

The RXEF160K-2 is mainly used in low voltage circuits and applications of up to 160V DC. It provides current protection of 2A-32A.
