PTC Resettable Fuses operate using a bimetallic element that contains two dissimilar metals with different thermal expansion properties. When a current flows through the element it heats up and its shape changes. This thermally-induced shape change causes an increase in the resistance of the element. If the current is small, the amount of heat produced will not be enough to cause the shape change and the resistance will remain low. When the current passing through the element exceeds the current rating of the fuse the element is heated to a higher temperature and a permanent shape change occurs that causes the resistance to increase. This increase in resistance causes the current through the element to drop and the element begins to cool down, and returns to its original shape thereby restoring the low resistance path for the current.
