Power management integrated circuits, or PMICs, are devices which handle, monitor, and optimize all power-management tasks for electronic systems, incorporating a broad range of circuitry for regulating power supply and distributed resources. PMICs also provide numerous other system level benefits and features, such as flexibility, scalability, and power optimization.

PMICs are often divided into two main categories, supervisors and other circuits such as regulators and controllers. Supervisors are dedicated chips that monitor the power supply and operating parameters of an electronic system and generate system reset signals, using a combination of hardware and software. Supervisors are used to detect undesired operating or environmental conditions, enabling an immediate reset of the system or taking corrective action.

The S-1000N34-I4T1U is a supervisor IC from Supertex Inc. This supervisor allows adjustable overvoltage and overcurrent protection, as well as thermal protection and brown-in/out protection of low voltage power supply. This IC\'s operating voltage can range from 4.5V to 4.63V, and is available in a very small 8-pin SOP package.

Working Principle

The S-1000N34-I4T1U supervisor provides overvoltage, overcurrent, and thermal protection to the circuit. When the internal switch of the IC is activated, the power supply is shut off. The supervisor IC is equipped with an internal reference voltage and sense circuit. It compares the reference voltage to the voltage drop across the power or battery lines. If the voltage drop is exceeded, the IC will generate a reset signal to stop the power supply and protect the circuit.

For overcurrent protection, the supervisor IC monitors the current flowing through the power supply, and is equipped with an overcurrent detect circuit. If the current is detected to exceed the set threshold, it will generate a reset signal to protect the circuit.

For thermal protection, the supervisor IC will reset the system if the specified temperature is reached. It is equipped with an internal temperature sensing circuit, as well as an open collector output which can be tied to an external temperature sensor. If the temperature exceeds the set threshold, the IC will generate a reset signal to protect the circuit.

Finally, for brown-in/out protection, the supervisor IC will reset the system if the power supply drops below or rises above the specified voltage. It is equipped with an open collector output which can be tied to an external undervoltage/overvoltage detector circuit. If the voltage is detected to surpass the set threshold, the IC will generate a reset signal to protect the circuit.
