Power management integrated circuit (PMIC) enables the power management of complex electronic systems. Current power management system usually comprises DC/DC converters, linear regulators, supervisors, light and display backlight control. By integrating many analog PWMs into a single chip, manufacturers can reduce design complexity, component count and size of the system while enhancing performance.
PMICs are widely used in many applications such as smart phones, tablet devices, notebooks, PCs, and embedded systems. One of the important components in PMIC is the Supervisors. Supervisors significantly improve system reliability by monitoring multiple power supplies, and can generate digital reset signals if any of the monitored supplies are disrupted to ensure safe system operation. For example, S-1009N36I-N4T1U is a supervisor IC from Richtek Technology Corp.
S-1009N36I-N4T1U Application Field and Working Principle
S-1009N36I-N4T1U is a 3.0V to 36V micropower supervisor IC, used for monitoring power supplies for reset signals or for system power up sequencing. It has a fixed 4 second delay and can detect voltage dropouts from 2.6V to 6.5V.
The supervisor can be used in applications like Automotive, Computer/Peripherals/Servers/Storage, Industrial, Networking/Telecom, Graphics and Multimedia, Mobile and Wireless Applications. It is not restricted to just these fields but since it is a robust power supply monitoring IC, it is widely used in the above mentioned fields.
The S-1009N36I-N4T1U consists of four different blocks - power-on reset (POR) / brown out detector (BOD) / power down detector (PDD)/ WDT. It also provides manual reset, advanced reset as well as system reset inputs. It can also detect over voltage and over current conditions.
The feature of the S-1009N36I-N4T1U supervisor IC is that it has an open drain manual reset outputs, a power-on reset (POR) output and a brownout detector (BOD) output. The POR output is an active-low reset and the BOD output is an active-high reset. Both the POR and BOD outputs are open drain CMOS compatible, hence allowing for sharing of a single reset line between multiple supervisors.
When operating, the S-1009N36I-N4T1U supervisor IC monitors the power supplied to the system. When the supply voltage drops below a predetermined threshold, the supervisor will activate the reset outputs. Additionally, manual reset inputs and advanced reset inputs are also available on the IC and these can be used to reset the system whenever required.
Apart from monitoring power supplies, the S-1009N36I-N4T1U can also be used to detect and protect against over-voltage and over-current conditions. It can be programmed to monitor a system voltage and detect when the voltage exceeds certain levels and issue reset signals when necessary. Similarly, it can be programmed to detect when the current drawn is above certain levels and issue reset signals when required.
The S-1009N36I-N4T1U supervisor IC provides flexibility and is robust in nature. It has low power consumption and can be used in various applications due to its wide operating voltage range from 3.0V to 36V. It has a fixed 4-second delay for the power-on reset, making the IC suitable for start-up sequencing applications. It provides maximum system reliability in cases where a manual reset is not present and where an over voltage/over current condition is detected, enabling wider application coverage.
