S-1167B20-I6T2U is a low dropout (LDO) linear Voltage Regulator from STMicroelectronics. It is designed to provide precise voltage regulation with low output voltage noise, low ripple, and low start-up current.
This LDO is suitable for applications requiring a wide input voltage range of 4.5 V to 20 V and can provide a regulated output voltage up to 1.2 V. It is capable of providing up to 1 A of continuous output current in a small SOT-23 package.
In addition, the LDO is protected against overload, over-temperature, and short-circuit conditions. This provides reliable and protected operation in various applications including telecom base stations, power supplies, peripherals, POS systems, game consoles, and household appliances.
Application Fields
The S-1167B20-I6T2U LDO regulator can be used in applications requiring a precision output voltage of 1.2 V for low-power operations. Applications include but are not limited to:
- Power over Ethernet (PoE) applications with a power requirement up to 25W
- Wireless Power Transmission such as Wireless Charging
- Cellular Base stations, cellular phones, and other portable devices
- Digital signal processors
- Digital cameras
Working Principle
The S-1167B20-I6T2U operates using a three-terminal topology and is based on a classic linear regulator. It works in two stages: voltage regulation and power stabilization. When the input voltage is applied, the voltage regulation stage comes into play and the output voltage is regulated by a shunt regulator.
This shunting regulator works by taking a small portion of the output current and comparing it to the reference voltage provided by the feedback network. When the current in the shunt regulator is higher than the reference voltage, the output is increased; if it is lower, the output is decreased. This causes the output voltage to be regulated to within the specified range.
The second stage, power stabilization, is a version of feed-forward control. It works by comparing the current at the output node of the voltage regulator to the reference current taken from the output node of the shunt regulator. If the current at the output node is higher than the reference current, the output voltage is increased; if it is lower, the output voltage is decreased. This causes the output power to be stabilized.
This combination of voltage regulation and power stabilization provides the S-1167B20-I6T2U with a very efficient performance with good line and load regulation, low output voltage noise, and low start-up current.
