S-4/10 Application Field and Working Principle

In the telecommunications industry, the S-4/10 is an integrated, highly reliable, and ultra-compact digital laser transmitter utilized for secure data transmission over short distances (up to 20km). It is mainly designed for scalable Fast Ethernet and the following protocol spans, e.g., ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode), FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface), SONET/SDH (Synchronic Optical Nets/Synchronous Digital Hierarchy), ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network), and others. In addition, the S-4/10 could also be used in applications where excellent pulse-to-pulse performance is required, such as CATV (Cable Television) and videoconferencing.

Most of the data generated from the Novell Computing and communications systems is in the form of pulses which are then transmitted by a laser beam which is generated by the S-4/10. The S-4/10 consists of three distinct parts – the laser, the interface, and the Electric-Optical subassembly – which work together to ensure that the data pulses are accurately generated and transmitted.

The laser produces a high power of light emission in the 86 to 860 nanometer range, making it suitable for use in transmitting data over short distances. The emitted light is so powerful that it can penetrate almost any and all objects. This allows the S-4/10 to operate in a wide range of demanding environments, including harsh, high-noise industrial and underground locations.

The S-4/10’s interface allows the connection of other equipment to the laser. The electrical connection ensures that the data is transmitted accurately, with the highest level of reliability.

The Electric-Optical subassembly is the third part of the S-4/10. It is responsible for the proper modulation of the laser light in order to accurately transmit the pulses sent by the transmitting equipment. This ensures that the pulses sent by the transmitting equipment are accurately transmitted over the data transmission link.
