PMIC - Supervisors: The Application and Working Principle of S-80928CNNB-G8YT2U
Power management integrated circuits (PMICs) are metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) devices that are used to regulate an electronic system\'s power delivery and consumption. PMICs are an essential part of any system\'s design, as they ensure the stability and reliability of the power supply and system, optimize performance, and increase efficiency. One type of PMIC device is referred to as a supervisor or a supervisory circuit. These devices are committed to monitoring system power anomalies, detecting reset events, and determining when soft-start operations are necessary to safely and appropriately power up the system. S-80928CNNB-G8YT2U is a supervisor product from ON Semiconductor that is recommended for use in a variety of applications, from consumer electronics to automotive applications and industrial control systems. It is provided in an 8-lead small-outline package (SOP-8), is AEC-Q100 qualified and meets Automotive Electronics Council (AEC) standards, and supports a wide operating temperature range from -40°C to +125°C. This makes it suitable for most applications and environments while still providing a great degree of system protection. As a supervisor device, S-80928CNNB-G8YT2U has a set of features designed to ensure system health and operational stability. These features help protect against various issues, such as over-voltage, under-voltage, surge current conditions, brown-out or over-current situations, etc. Its main application and working principle is to monitor system power anomalies and reset events while ensuring safe power-up and shutdown. The S-80928CNNB-G8YT2U consists of a power-on reset (POR) function, a low-voltage reset (LVR) function, and a watchdog timer (WDT) (Figure 1). A POR closes power at abnormal voltages and should be triggered low during startup and deactivated on high voltage. The LVR works in the same way, closing power when the voltage is too low, but this time with a selectable upper and lower-voltage window to ensure the system remains within its operating limits. The WDT resets the system in case of failure, providing protection against system lock up or a hang state.Figure 1: Block diagram of S-80928CNNB-G8YT2U SupervisorThe POR and LVR functions of the S-80928CNNB-G8YT2U are able to detect compounding events and are monitored over an active integration period. This means that the supervisor does not immediately reset the system on the first indication of an anomaly, but rather allows for a period of stabilization during which the problem can be addressed. This ensures that the system is able to recover from short-term power anomalies and prevents damage from being done to the system. The WDT has a configurable timeout range of 100ms to 210 seconds and is triggered by a falling edge of the reset signal, just like the POR and LVR. The WDT’s purpose is to ensure that a stuck system will be reset and will not remain in an undesired position. Additionally, the supervisor also has a temperature-compensated delay line and an open-drain reset output, providing a standard system reset signal, as well as an optional programmable open-drain output edge delay. The S-80928CNNB-G8YT2U supervisor is an all-in-one solution for system power and reset functionality, offering a great degree of protection and reliability for all types of applications. Its wide operating temperature range, combined with its AEC-Q100 qualification, make it the perfect choice for automotive and industrial control systems, and the added WDT and delay line features provide the ability to recover from most power anomalies and prevent system hangs. All in all, the S-80928CNNB-G8YT2U supervisor from ON Semiconductor is an excellent choice for system stability and reliability. The specific data is subject to PDF, and the above content is for reference
