PMIC - Voltage Regulators - DC DC Switching Controllers is a category of devices used to convert, control and regulate power from one DC voltage level to another and from one DC-AC voltage level to another. The S-8355Q45MC-OXET2U application is for power conversion and/or regulation of input voltages from 1.2V-5.5V to a lower output voltage from 0.7V-2.1V with up to 4A output current. It is designed for efficiently converting a broader range of input voltages and features an internal low dropout regulator (LDO) for low power consumption on 4-channel outputs.
The device utilizes a monolithic step-down DC-DC converter that performs Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) control to provide excellent power conversion efficiency, high switching frequency, low component count and minimized external component configuration. It offers an adjustable output voltage down to 0.7V and provides an internal low output voltage start-up feature to control the output voltage at the start-up operation. It also provides voltage tracking function that supports variable load conditions.
The S-8355Q45MC-OXET2U employs a synchronous rectifier control architecture that helps reduce input power loss. Likewise, the synchronous rectifier configuration nearly eliminates the switching losses due to body diode conduction. This makes the device especially suitable for applications with lower input voltages since it reduces the quiescent current and improves conversion efficiency. The output current limit can be set to 4A, making the device well-suited for applications that require high drive current from low supply voltages.
The S-8355Q45MC-OXET2U also features an externally adjustable max. frequency with auto-synchronization for up to 4 operating channels. This allows for higher efficiency at lower output currents and improved EMI compliance due to reduced switching frequencies. The device also includes a programmable internal soft start which eliminates any inrush current spike on output load startup. Moreover, the device is equipped with a wide soft-stop ramp to ensure a smooth transition while powering down the circuits.
The device is also provided with a wide array of protection features such as over-temperature shutdown and output short-circuit protection to ensure long term operation health. In addition, the device includes a load disconnect signal input feature to quickly turn on or off any power source. This can be used to implement over-discharge protection for Li-Ion battery applications. Finally, for automotive applications, the S-8355Q45MC-OXET2U also has Built-In-Self-Test (BIST) and advanced diagnostics that can detect fault conditions.
